I ran the Boulder Bolder 10k with my 11 year old grandson again this Memorial Day. We finished 1 minute and 20 seconds faster then last years time. There were almost 50,000 runners that finished the race. In my age group 70 years and older, there were only 73 runners who finished. I was pleased but my grandson said I didn't go fast enough for him, so next years is he is going to race with someone faster and I will have to find a new partner.

A poem and a note to my friends

A poem I received in an email - I thought to share it with my friends.  

Whether you know it or not, you are my friend.

Around the corner I have a friend,

In this great city that has no end,

Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,

And before I know it, a year is gone.

And I never see my old friends face,

For life is a swift and terrible race,

He knows I like him just as well,

As in the days when I rang his bell.

And he rang mine but we were younger then,

And now we are busy, tired men.

Tired of playing a foolish game,

Tired of trying to make a name.

' Tomorrow' I say! 'I will call on Jim

Just to show that I'm thinking of him.'

Another sad note

I was just notified that we lost another of our classmates recently.

Elaine's Passing

Jay, I was so sorry to hear about Elaine's passing. I have been traveling and failed to see the post until now. Elaine was my first sweetheart when we were in 4th grade at Williard and this news hits me pretty hard.

That she and you locked hearts and stayed that way, built a wonderful life together, and left a loving family legacy, says all that needs to be said as a memorial to her life.

A Texas viewpoint from Bob

You know what's really nice about coming down to the Rio Grande Valley besides the warm weather?

It's being with folks your own age.  You feel younger when you're surrounded by a crowd of retirees.  I noticed it when we had our reunion - I felt younger for a few days.  You all made me feel comfortable and brought back memories of youthful days.  Down here in the valley, I am among many folks older than I and I feel like a kid with them around - it's nice to feel like a kid again. 

Oh, I don't mind the warm weather and the lack of snow (I used to luxuriate in the machoness of facing the elements of below zero weather and all of it's hazards).  Now I've been there and done that and I particularly enjoy sunshine  and warm weather in the month of February.  I really really like not shoveling snow and sliding around on slick streets.  Down here the whole area is geared to entertaining the older crowd with activities and restaurants and people who appreciate the pace of a different generation.  The folks around here are polite and respectful and really seem to care.  Why didn't anyone tell me about this long ago?

Meanwhile, I hope all of you are enjoying the winterness of this year.  It came in with a blast and has overstayed it's welcome.  Hang in there, it's almost Valentines Day and St Patrick is coming. 

I've received some response regarding a luncheon (early April seems to be the best time).  All you home folk  (people in the KC area)  be sure to come forth and enjoy each other's company for a few hours.  Once we settle on the exact time, date and place, we will post it right here.  I'm really looking forward to seeing you again - we all turned out to be such nice people (didn't we). 

Well it's time for me to go out and take a nap in the sun while the warm southerly breeze caresses the trees.  Talk to you later.

A sad note from Jay Salmon

Dear Classmates

  More sad news-my beloved wife and classmate, Elaine Earhart Salmon, succumbed to complications of Hodgkin's Disease on 1/31..She had been diagnosed even before the class reunion but neither the usual chemo nor a clinical trial proved successful.  Our son, Stuart, being an Oncologist himself, left no stone unturned.  Elaine went peacefully in her sleep just hours after seeing all 3 of our kids and 3 of 4 grandchildren.  She also learned shortly before her death that Karin, our youngest, is expecting.  My kids, being far more into computers than their Luddite old man, have up a web site www.elainesalmon.com which will include the obituary, pictures and plans for a later event to celebrate her life.

MORE OF CLAUDINE’S TRAVELS

Herewith, in response to less than overwhelming demand, Part 2 of “Beijing to Lhasa to Kathmandu”.

Suggesting that you might want to read this puts me in mind of my roommate Heather wanting to share her Thesis with me.

While attending graduate school at Georgetown University, I shared one bedroom of a two-bedroom apartment in a three apartment Georgetown townhouse with Heather, a graduate student from Texas enrolled in Georgetown’s Foreign Service School. Heather was beginning her third year of a two year Master’s degree program unable to pass the Georgetown created and non- standard French exam and unable to complete her Thesis.

Georgetown’s language exams were non-standard, and very difficult, so the French part of Heather’s long stint in Graduate school was understandable. But, Heather’s family was wealthy, so get a tutor?

The Thesis, on the other hand, just kept going on, and on, and on. Unfortunately, no matter the work entailed, it never engendered any interest even on the part of the assigned professor or me, the captive audience roommate.

On evenings I was suffering from insomnia, I would turn on my light, awaken Heather, and ask her to talk to me about her latest Thesis (the focus or “thesis” of the thesis frequently changed). Heather always accommodated, and after a bit of listening I would always fall peacefully asleep.

When I graduated and left Georgetown, Heather was in her fourth year of the two-year Foreign Service Graduate program and the Thesis was yet longer and remained of interest only to Heather.

There are similarities here between the Tibet travelogue and the Thesis, but I have vowed to write this, and Bob has been kind enough to format and incorporate the photographs, and what else is there to do in January? If you are inclined to read any of this, you might want to read about Lhasa, skip or skim to Mt. Everest and skim through the remaining monasteries as well.

Please be assured that Part 3 (Nepal) is on the way. (smiley face here)

I will refrain from sharing a motoring trip to the Auvergne and the Rhone Valley regions of France in October. Rodney and I had traveled most of these roads before and more than once, but it is hard to get enough of France. It remains the most beautiful country in the world. Unfortunately it is inhabited by some of the most arrogant, irritating, and pompous of peoples. And, true to form, they went on a general transportation strike leaving Rodney and me to spend our last couple of days trying to ensure that we could get home.

Geraldine Kramer (English teacher) Passed Away

GERALDINE "JERRY" (KRAMER) (McINTYRE) LINDELL

 Jerry was born on November 21, 1929, and passed away on January 1, 2011. She was a lifelong Kansas City resident who graduated from Westport High School, received her undergraduate degree at Central Missouri State University and her Master's Degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Early in her working life she was an air hostess for TWA, worked as a tour guide at the Alexander Majors Historic House and Museum, and was a radio announcer at WDAF-AM working with Walt Bodine. She went on to teach English at Paseo High School and Penn Valley Community College. With her late husband, Dr. John McIntyre, she helped run McIntyre Productions, producing educational filmstrips and slide shows. She and Dr. McIntyre also traveled extensively, visiting Australia, Japan, the U.K. and other international destinations. In the early 1990s, she became a managing partner of the National Law Enforcement Training Center, helping to produce educational materials and seminars for law enforcement defensive tactics trainers. Jerry was known for her love of books, gardening, sewing and gourmet cooking. She also enjoyed discussing the history of Kansas City and its prominent citizens. She was an outgoing and upbeat person who truly never met a stranger. She is survived by her husband of eight years, James Lindell of Kansas City, MO, a retired reasonable use-of- force and physical training supervisor for the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department; and her brother and sister-in- law, Bud and Sue Kramer of Waynesboro, VA. Travel to China, Tibet, and Nepal

Hello classmates

When I sat down sometime in the spring of ‘09 to write a piece for the 50th
Reunion Yearbook on my 45 or so years of travel, I had about 100 highlighted
Michelin maps and boxes and boxes of uncaptioned photos. Many provided
few clues as to where or when. Nor had I kept any journals and my guidebooks
contained very few marginal markings. So, the trips were difficult to reconstruct
and many many travel memories were gone for good.

I vowed then to write reports on my future travels, something to occupy me in
the old age home. I have done fairly well thus far although a trip to France in
October is thus far unreported and fast fading.

Herewith, I have submitted Part 1 of a report on a trip Rodney and I, Brother
Jimmy, and John Fawcett took in September. It was a great adventure for us.
And, if I had to write about it I hope at least a few of you may enjoy reading parts
or perhaps just looking at the photographs.

Merry Christmas or Happy holidays to all of you, and I congratulate Rex on making
through one of the big ones although they will all be “big” from here on out, huh?

70!!!

I approach my 70th birthday this Saturday with all the joy of a motorist approaching a known speed trap in a small Arkansas town. I gotta go through the damn thing, but don't want to.

And I only mention it to you because I am among the 'oldest' of the class, so get to experience the benchmark before most. ( I could never play baseball with Hook, Kenworthy or Blackburn because 1/1 was the cutoff date for 3&2 leagues and I was 'too old'.))

If I feel any different when I wake up on Sunday, will let you know.

We were blessed with the opportunity to take a pretty big trip last month.  Rome, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Egypt.  We took over 600 pictures, but this link is just those with one or both of us in it.  Only 75 pictures, but if you use slide show, the default is 3 seconds per pix.  That's less than 4 minutes, and you can pause it and look longer, or just stop it and be done!
